1. Always arrive early to each mentor session and
rap session. This has proven to be a great opportunity to check
in with the advisor, or even have some one-to-one time with individual
students who may arrive early. This also gives you time to get organized
or correct any last minute issues that may arise.
2. Remember to step back and allow the students to
lead. It is easier sometimes to jump in and "fix" things,
but give your students a chance, those skill building opportunities
are invaluable.
3. Always take the time to debrief sessions at the
rap session. Make sure your students are feeling comfortable with
their role as mentor and that they have the tools and support they
need. Also check in with them personally, ask how their classes
are going, what their grades are, etc. Sometimes they need encouragement
to keep on the right track.
4. Always have a back up plan for your activities.
If you planned an activity for a large group, have a plan if less
people show up and vice versa. Also, have extra activities on hand
that can be used to fill extra time.
5. Supplies to always have on hand include markers,
tape (masking and duct), and extra nametags.
6. Always carry with you mentors' name and contact
information. You never know when you may need to contact them (reminders,
checking in, issues). It is also helpful to carry with you advisor's
names and contact information, including prep time and school schedule.
7. Carry with you extra applications for mentors.
If a student drops out unexpectedly, or students show an interest
in the program, you are prepared to recruit on the spot.
8. Always carry program brochures, program information
sheets, and business cards for impromptu principal, district or
business meetings. Remember to keep it interactive, upbeat and fun
for the students. Keep them involved to keep them coming back.
- Make contact with all contracted sites
- Obtain Administrator Buy-in for next year (both
high school & middle school)
- Retain advisors at existing sites
- Identify returning mentors and protégés
in conjunction with the initial recruitment for next year - secure
all necessary applications and guardian consent forms
- Enlist the help of returning mentors for early
Fall mentor/advisor trainings
- Set the training date early in the fall to begin
your sessions by October 1, 2002
If you are able to achieve some or all
of these items prior to the beginning of next year (Fall semester);
you should greatly increase your chances of a successful 16 week
program.
