Counties are being offered three options for
the fall session to transition to "No Child Left Behind Act".
Unique needs at the county level will determine which option best
assists them in making a smooth and orderly shift to the new model
in January.
Option I: Getting Started: Beginning the
progress toward transition
For counties who selected five sites in the spring of 2002, for
implementation in the fall of 2002, this option allows counties
to honor the commitment made to their school sites, advisors and
mentors. The structure of the program, i.e., one hour session, once
per week would also be maintained, while a shift to the new protégé
population will begin. This option gives counties four months to
implement a site reduction plan and negotiate space for longer and
additional sessions.
- Begin local data review and needs assessment
process
- Provide current number of sites: 4-5 sites
- Provide ten mentor/protégé
matches: 10-15 at each site
- Provide 1 hour per week mentor sessions,
prepare to increase in January 2003
- Begin recruiting higher risk protégé
population e.g., low achieving, isolated, non-participating
- The program structure will be consistent
with the statewide model in January 2003
Option II: Taking Transitional Steps: Moderate
progress toward transition
For counties able to begin the site reduction process, this option
provides time to get some of the new structure in place in the fall.
But, because there are no matches, more time is available for staff,
advisors and mentors to prepare for the logistical and structural
changes in the spring of 2003.
- Begin local data review and needs assessment
process,
- Begin the site reduction process. Identify
2-5 project sites (high school and middle school feeder site)
of the existing 4-5 sites
- Identify, screen and train 2-5 advisors
- Identify, screen and train10 mentors at each
of the 2-5 sites by October 1, 2002 (site x mentors = total of
___mentors)
- Train advisors and mentors on the new "No
Child Left Behind Act" target population
- Provide no matches in the fall
- Plan for the recruitment of higher risk protégé
population in January
- Begin introducing content changes
- The program structure will be consistent
with the statewide model in January 2003
Option III: Giant Step: Substantial progress
toward transition
For counties able to reduce sites in the fall, make logistical arrangements
and increase the duration and frequency of the sessions, this option
will put counties in an readiness position for a January 2003 start
date.
- Begin local data review and needs assessment
process
- Reduce to 2-3 sites
- Identify and screen 2-3 advisors
- Recruit, screen and train 10 mentors and
10 protégés
- Provide 10 mentor/protégé
matches
- Provide two 90 minute sessions at 3 sites
for 8 weeks or, one two hour session at 2 sites
- Identify protégés at meet
the target population criteria
- Begin introducing content changes
- Begin content transition
- The program structure will be consistent
with the statewide model in January 2003
